CLUB HISTORY
Following are some of the “fun” tournaments that were played at EACC through the years.
Kicker’s Handicap – 18 holes, medal play; choose your handicap with view of bringing score between two scores selected by the committee, such as 70 and 80 or 75 and 85. The committee pre-selected the winning score in that range and placed it in a sealed envelope.
• Another version of a Kicker’s tournament – A player may play over again one shot on every hole provided he does it before he plays the next stroke; he may not replay a putt.
• Play 18 holes and select your best 9 holes – subtract one-half your handicap.
Flag contest – Add par to your handicap and plant a flag at the point where the ball rests on the last stroke, flag flying at farthest point wins. One year the winning flag was on the 19th hole.
Select nine holes – Holes will be chosen by the golf committee and placed in a sealed envelope – one-half handicap.
Pig and Poke Tournament – Contestants start out to play but don’t know what kind of a tournament they’re playing. They are told to keep score on every hole and to hole out all putts. After all contestants have started one of the committee draws from a hat the number of the holes that are to count.
One-club tournament played at medal play for 18 holes.
Contest of ages – 18 holes full handicap in following divisions. Ages up to 35; ages 36 to 50 and over 50 years.
Grub Stake Match – Losing team to buy dinner.
On the serious side I found that for at least one tournament that had a qualifier, you could try to qualify multiple times but your qualifying score would be the average of your attempts, not your best score.
The club championship was formerly played at match play after a qualifier and in a very compact schedule. For example in 1922 qualifying was on August 19-23. First round of matches played August 26-28; second round August 29-30; third round August 31 and September 1; finals played on September 3.
