CLUB HISTORY

Correction: Bruce Davidson’s double eagle was on hole #3 not #2 as noted last month.

This year the tennis courts were transformed into pickle ball courts. So what other sports were enjoyed in the past at East Aurora Country Club.

From The BUFFALO COURIER-EXPRESS, Saturday, March 3, l946:
Trap shooting has become a popular weekly sport at the East Aurora Country Club and each pleasant Sunday morning finds a large group enjoying the sport. Among the enthusiasts are Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Wattles, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Bruce K. Conover, Jr., Jack Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. Earl C. Grever, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred P. Spooner, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Franklin, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Michels.

*Many of our current members participated in this activity and until recently the trap houses were in the valley just off the first tee.

The next is from The BUFFALO COURIER EXPRESS Saturday, January 11, 1947:
The ski tow and skating rink are open at the East Aurora Country Club and today there will be open house. Tomorrow the regular buffet dinner will be served from 1.30 until 9 p. m. I would assume the ski tow was on the hill of the current driving range. It should be noted that the hill was higher in the past, but was lowered when the range was expanded. This area has also been used for sledding and tobogganing. Where the skating rink was I have no idea. If anyone knows please let me know.

Another activity that I would be interested in finding more information about follows.

BUFFALO EVENING NEWS—Thursday, December 11, 1947:
The annual turkey shoot of East Aurora Country Club will be held Sunday at the club. Mr. Alfred P. Spooner, general chairman of the party, announces that a barbecue luncheon will be served during the day.

Among those who are assisting on the committee are Mr. and Mrs. Earl C. Grever, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Stitzel, Mr. and Mrs. Bay H. Puffer, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas S. Bratton, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Michel, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Mileham, Mr. and Mrs. Carlton S. Frantz, Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Harton, Mr. and Mrs. Edward R. Woods.

Mr. Spooner has called a meeting of the committee for tomorrow evening in the clubhouse.

Many members have also enjoyed cross country skiing and snow shoeing around the course. The past few years have limited them, but if our winter so far is any indication there should be plenty of chances to enjoy them once again.
